Half the elevation is untouched and it still reads as a different house, because the eye follows the lines rather than the walls. The garage, in a warmer grey than the house with the corner trim picked out darker. Cladding like this is all vertical joints — the panel lines run floor to parapet and every one of them catches the light differently, so a patchy coat shows up as stripes rather than blotches. It is the one surface where working the full height of a panel in a single pass actually matters. The same alfresco from across the water, which shows why the sheeting runs as far as it does. The deck goes straight to the coping with no margin, and anything that goes in a pool comes back out through somebody's filter — so the whole run between the pergola and the water gets covered and checked before a lid comes off a tin. Exposed rafters are slow work and there is no way around it — every beam has four faces, the underside is the one everyone sees from a chair, and it is the one you reach last and at the worst angle.
