Every leaf, edge and rebate is brushed, and the doors have to keep folding once it cures — too heavy a coat in the wrong place and the set binds the first time someone closes it. Before. After, from the same spot. The brick, the weatherboard and the new cladding all carry the same white, which is what makes three surfaces read as one building. The cladding, slab and gate went in between the two photos — that part is not our work, only the paint on it is. Before. A red-brick commercial building of a kind there are thousands of across Melbourne's industrial pockets — sound, but dated, and reading as older than it is. Mid-job, and this is where most of the hours on a facade like this actually go. Every window, every sill and the full run of roof trim is papered and taped before any colour goes near the brick. A scissor lift rather than ladders, because the work is continuous along the elevation and getting up and down for each section is how a day disappears. After. Brick, roller door, window frames and trim all carried to the one charcoal, which is what collapses a busy elevation into a single clean shape. Painting face brick is a one-way decision and worth saying so — it cannot be returned to bare brick later, so it is a choice to make deliberately rather than on the day. Inside the same building.
